Ethel Myers was born in Worthington, Minn., in 1906. Bud and Ethel met while she taught school near Pawnee Buttes and near Grover for several years. The children walked to schools one or two miles and carried lunch boxes. On holidays programs were held and parents came bringing pies and box lunches, sold to raise money for school. Dances were held for entertainment. While Ethel taught at Pawnee Center school she lived with the Nelsons about a mile from the school. Bud and Ethel were married in 1930 and he farmed his father's land. It was the years of the depression. No rain fell and land blew sand covering fdnces and buildings. Markets went down; cattle sold for $6 each, hogs 25 cents, eggs 6 cents adozen, chickens 25 cents. Land sold for 92.50 per acre, heat was 28 cents a bushel. Men left the farms to work for $1 per day on governmentjobs. Some stayed
on their land, too poor to move. They went to town for flour, sugar and coffee. Corn cobs vrere used to cook on and the heat was with coal hauled from the Hill Coal Mine (between Buckingham and Keota) for g3 per ton. Hogs were butchered on farms, salted and smoked. Flour was sold in cotton print sacks which clothes were made of. In 1949 a snow storm came that lasted 3 days. The winds drifted roads and buildings
under 8 or 10 foot drifts. County opened
roads and winds blew them shut. Schools
were closed and travelers were stranded for
several days at neighbors. Stranded cattle
and sheep were fed by planes dropping baled
hay.
A.B. Eades Jr. and Ethel had four children;
Donna, Harry, Jim and Linda, who all
attended and graduated from New Raymer.
Donna taught scho<-rl in Purcell, New Raymer,
Fort Morgan and is still teaching in
Littleton. She married Jerry Hobbs and has
two children, Tim and Diane. Harry served
in the Army and worked in oil fields until he
farmed the home place. Jim served in the Air
Force then went into business in a garage in
East Lake, Colo. He was married and had
three children, Cindy, Sandy and Jimmy.
Linda attended Colorado Teachers College
and taught school in Colorado Springs. She
was married and has two children Jonica and
Josh.
Since the family are all gone from home
Ethel spends her spare time with her hobby
of painting. She takes old homestead pictures
and paints them in water color.
