Can you believe a woman scalping (10) sleeping Indians? On March 15, 1697 during a raid of twenty (20) Indians upon Haverhill, Mass., two women were taken captive. Hannah Duston and Mary Neff, along with 15 others, were taken to be sold as slaves in Canada. The raid took the lives of 27 settlers killing her 15 day old baby by bashing it to death against a tree because it would not stop crying. Her husband, Thomas, and the other children escaped but he was unable to save Hannah, the baby and the nurse, Mrs. Neff. On their way to Canada, Hannah, the 39 year old mother of twelve (12) massacred 10 of the Indians, scalping them for the bounty, and escaped back to her home. Mrs. Neff and a 14 year old boy aided her. The Indians had grown careless as they considered the women too worn out to attempt an escape so no watch was set for the night and they all fell asleep. They took hatchets and killed them. They hastily piled food and weapons in a canoe . They realized they had no proof of their story so went back and with a knife, scalped their victims. They traveled by night, hiding in the day, until they finally reached home. The scalps were worth fifty pounds each. The attack on Haverhill caused the establishment of several garrison houses to protect the area.
The site of this valor was a 4 acre island in the southeast corner of Boscawen, just north of Concord. Two of the dozen Indians escaped to tell the story. Hannah was honored with a statue on this isolated island and it is the first permanent memorial honoring a woman in this country in 1874. This unusual woman is the seventh great grandmother of this month's spotlight feature, Charles Myers.
